I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. The blurb was a little cryptic. Now that I read the book, I understand why. The book is a little hard to sum up. Her's my best one sentence attempt: on the island of Thisby, carnivorous wild horses come out of the ocean, and the bravest of the island residents race them on the beach.
I really enjoyed the book. Maggie Stiefvater's writing is beautiful. The story had a mythical, fairy tale quality. The setting is evocatively described. The pacing is slow but deliberate. Bit by bit, the book drew me in. But by the climactic race scene, I was holding my breath.
I love the cover of this one - everytime I see it I'm like "ooooh, horse..." haha ;o) I can't decide if it's one I want to read or not...I may snag it from the Lib - that way if I go "uh" I don't feel bad about it, haha...Though it's sounding more and more appealing...
ReplyDeleteI agree with RivkaBelle. I do like the cover. But I like the UK cover a bit better. Thanks for the great review! :D
ReplyDeleteTayte's right. UK cover:

Which reminds me of this cover of Catcher in the Rye:

I've seen so many reviews about this book with people saying they liked it but didn't think it was great. I'm hesitant to read it because I thought the Shiver series was just ok. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this! Your post just reminded me to request the public library to buy it. So thanks!
