YA: Hot off the Presses April 3-9

Are you wondering what great new YA books come out this week? Today I'm kicking off a new feature -- a Tuesday post featuring brand new YA releases.

Do you ever wonder why most books come out on Tuesdays?  According to my internet research, that's because book sales are tracked in weekly increments that begin on Tuesday and go through the following Monday.

(If there are any book industry people reading this who can explain further, please do!)

Here are some books that you can pick up this week -- April 1-April 8. You can click on the red text for more info:

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (Houghton Mifflin, April 3)

I'm super-excited about this one -- in fact, it hit my doorstep right while I was typing up this post. I won a copy in a Twitter contest held by Andrea @ The Busy Bibliophile.  An assassin nun? How cool is that?

The List by Siobhan Vivian (Push/Scholastic, April 1)

Did you miss my review of this YA contemporary? Check it out here. I still have my ARC and no one snatched it up in my comments contest. If you're interested, leave me a comment and I'll randomize all the names of anyone who'd like it, pick a winner, and mail it out tomorrow.

Ripper by Amy Carol Reeves (Flux, April 8)

I decided this book was too scary for me -- I know, I'm chicken -- and I offered it up in Steal My ARCs.  Hayley from Booking It With Hayley G snatched it right up.

Black Heart (Curse Workers 3) by Holly Black (Margaret K. McElderry, April 3)

My blogging pal Heather at Flyleaf Review is excited for this one. I've never read this series --someone tell me what it's all about?!

Above by Leah Bobet (Arthur Levine/Scholastic, April 1)

Immortal City by Scott Speer (Razorbill, April 3)

So... have you read any of these already? Are you planning to? What did you think if you read them? Should I buy, beg, or borrow?

  1. Totally cannot wait to read Black Heart!! I actually may drop everything just to read it. For real. :) Ripper sounds really awesome too. I really want to read The List too. It sounds like a book I would enjoy. I have really liked reading peoples reviews on it. Just finished Grave Mercy yesterday and I liked it. It was a bit confusing since it was heavy on history, but once I googled the info I really enjoyed it. Great idea doing this weekly feature.

    1. Let me know what you think about Above. People seem to either really love it or be really confused by it.

  3. I definitely need to read Immortal City. I just love the idea of everyone knowing the Angels and how they are so famous and all the gossip is about them. Oh and I would love to be entered in the drawing for your ARC of The List. I definitely want to read that book, also.

    1. That one wasn't on my radar and I'm kind of iffy on angels books. I'm putting that on my Wait and See list.

    2. Angels are my absolute fave so I am all over any angel book.

    3. Have you read Embrace? I have that one on my pile but haven't read it yet.

    1. Well, I hope I'm right about that. It doesn't make any sense otherwise!

  8. This is how I described Black Heart when I posted about it for Waiting On Wednesday: Black Heart is the third (and I believe final) book set in a world where the mob is organized around illegal magic. Cassel is an anti-hero who grew up learning the art of the con and now spends his time trying to walk the fine line between right and wrong, himself and his family, and the law and the mob.

I seriously can not wait to finish this series. It is sooooo good! And Grave Mercy looks great too! I would buy it, but I'm already overbudget for this week, so I'm going to buy it soon... I think. There are always more books I want to buy than I can afford or actually read.

    1. Thanks for giving me the scoop!! That does sound like something I might like. I might put the other two books on my summer reading list and try to catch up.

Here you on the over budget thing. When I got my credit card bill this month I decided I would add up how much I spent on books. Yikes. It was a lot more than I thought!

  9. Most of these are on my wishlist but I was especially interested in reading your review of THE LIST. All my YA books I pass on to a friend to put in her "library" in her classroom and this one sounds exactly the type she loves to offer to her kids, so toss my name in the hat.

  10. I somehow missed your review of The List!!! I dunno how but I rectified the situation. It sounds so good! I've been curious to read it. I'd say out of all these I'm most interested in reading Immortal City. I have Grave Mercy from Netgalley and actually lost interest pretty quick. I need to pick it up again. I've heard the series by Holly Black is good but I haven't read anything by her yet.

I'd love to be entered in the mix for The List.

Love the covers for Above and Grave Mercy, though I'm not sure they're quite my reading flavor...Look cool anyway :o)

    1. I have only read the List and am reading Grave Mercy.

it really depends on what kind of books you like -- write back and tell me some of your favorites ;)

The List is a YA contemporary. Grave Mercy is historical fiction, but sounds like it has a lot of action.

Ripper is based on Jack the Ripper, Above sounds like fantasy/sci-fi, Immortal City is an angel book.

    2. Argh -- Blogger keeps eating my comments - what's up with that?

Write back and let me know what kind of books you like, and I'll give you a recommendation.

  14. GRAVE MERCY jumps out at me. I've read a couple of rave reviews.

I will read RIPPER, but during the day. It is fascinating subject matter.

  15. A couple of these I haven't seen yet, so thanks for sharing. Several are on my tbr list. I have the first book in the Curse Workers series on my tbr list, but haven't read it yet. That is okay though because now I can just read the whole series at once!

  16. Oh, I forgot. I was going to also say that movie and cd releases are also on Tuesdays, so it isn't just a book thing. :) I guess that's how the whole marketing/sales industry does it for some reason.

  17. I think most videogames come out on Tuesday as well - or they do if it's an international release.

I like the sound of Grave Mercy. I've seen it everywhere over the last fortnight and it looks amazing.

    1. I'm really enjoying it. As I will confess in my review, I went to a high school that did not teach world history, so I am having to do some research on fifteenth century Europe. I'm loving it!
