I'm joining TGIF again today. This meme is hosted by GReads. It's a chance to recap the week on our blog and answer a question.
Today's question: What's Under That Cover? What are some not so great book covers with great stories inside?
I accidentally answered this question last week -- duh!! A few people read the post before I could take it down. If you did, I apologize!
I have the highest respect for the people who design book covers. I can't even draw a stick figure. But sometimes I feel like the cover doesn't really fit the book inside. Or the cover just doesn't grab me.
The Too Bland Cover
This cover, pretty as it was with its mixed metallic design, reveals absolutely nothing about the book. To me, it looks like a corporate logo. Or that emblem thingy on the front of a car. But the book is fantastic! Put it on your list if it isn't already!
The Too Embarrassing Cover
This cover was cute -- too cute for me. I thought this book was YA but the cover feels very tweenish. The book inside might be amazing -- I don't know. I was too embarrassed to pick it up.
The Clever, but .... Cover
I get the point of this cover, and it does fit the book, but something about it disturbs me. I'm not sure what bothers me. The headless girl, the bleached-out hair, the fake bake, the lipstick ammo? All of the above? Maybe that was the point? Doesn't matter, because I LOVE Libba Bray. I'll read anything she writes. Her grocery list. If you haven't read Beauty Queens, get the audiobook. Libba Bray reads it herself and she's AMAZING. I think she's an actress in her spare time.
Tell me about some of your least favorite covers. I know you'll be diplomatic...
What Happened This Week On My Blog:
I had some Blogger-related challenges that can only be blamed on the fact that my brain can't handle a calendar that starts with Monday instead of Sunday. So some of my posts went up when I was least expecting them. My Saturday review went up on Monday, and so on. As Emily Litella would say, "Never mind!"
Monday I reviewed Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein. Click on that red text to check it out.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I ran my "Love and Loss" review series. I looked at First Comes Love by Katie Kacvinsky, In Honor by Jessi Kirby and Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson. Click on the red titles to open those reviews in a new window.
Today I'm reviewing Golden Lily by Richelle Mead plus a fun Adrian Ivashkov quote quiz. Scroll up to the next post after this one to check that out!
I totally agree with the Legend cover. I never would have picked that book up if it weren't for reviews that I read about it. I am so glad I did though. I haven't read the other two, but I have to agree that The International Kissing Club cover is very cutesy and too young looking.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if they wanted to avoid a "girly" cover. But I think the result is a cover that tells you nothing about the book. I hope people still will pick the book up and try it out!
DeleteHehe! I just saw this post and was like "Wait a minute didn't she already post this?"
DeleteYeah, sorry. You're super-sweet to comment twice!!
DeleteHer grocery list:) LOL this made me laugh:)
ReplyDeleteI would read it!!! I bet she has a way to make it suspenseful. Or funny.
DeleteI agree Jen! And is that a Golden Lily Adrian quiz?? Yeah! :) 0.0
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments on Legend! I had seen that book around a lot but never even read the synopsis since the cover looked so... bland. But your post finally encouraged me to look it up and it sounds pretty good. I might give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThe Brenna Blixen novels by Liz Reinhardt had not so great covers but amazing stories. Thankfully, she now have new covers and wow, they are bomb :D
ReplyDeletei agree with Legends, the cover doesn't appeal to me AT ALL. but i hear it's an amazing read and i will eventually get to it. i actually listened to Beauty Queens, too, and you're right, it was hilarious, especially the way she read it. but i'm kind of indifferent on the cover. great choices! ~dixie
ReplyDeleteI have Legend sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read! I need to get to that soon! And I agree with you on the cover of The International Kissing Club - it looks very tweenish! And I really want to read Beauty Queens! I just got A Great and Terrible Beauty so I hope to read that one soon.
ReplyDeleteI can't really think of too many covers that I really don't like... I'm sure I know of some, but I'm drawing a blank!
Great choices Jen! I agree with Legend! How was it? :)Here's mine-http://wwwthebookshelves.blogspot.com/2012/05/tgif-3show-me-your-cover.html
ReplyDelete:D Happy Reading Jen!
I agree with you about Legend. The story is amazing, but the cover is....too simple. My favorite cover right now is The Crimson Crown by cinda willaims chima. It looks epic!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any favourite covers right now.
ReplyDeleteI would not like to design covers.
My problem, ALWAYS, are cover models. They NEVER match the story or image in my head. I'm going on the author description. Shouldn't they be??
