My summary: Lorelei's widowed father has just remarried. She's not happy about that, but she's cheered by the sight of a brand new school that's appeared as if by magic in her neighborhood. Her father says she can't attend. Then her old school suddenly burns down. Everything at Splendid Academy seems just ... splendid. That is, until Lorelei and her friend Andrew start noticing strange things going on at school. Can they get to the bottom of what's not so sweet at Splendid?

My thoughts:  I love reading middle grade fiction! Unapologetically gross and gory, The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy takes kids' fondest hopes (candy math) and deepest fears (teachers who are out to get them) and mixes them all up in a creepy, delightful way. Think Hansel and Gretel meets Roald Dahl!

The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy is a fun, fast-paced account of one girl's attempts to expose the truth about the evildoings of adults. Lorelei decides that in spite of how wonderful everything seems at her new school, there's something rotten underneath.

By the way this one ended, I also think that a sequel may be in store!

  1. Ohh I have this book and it's coming up on my reading list pretty soon. It sounds so good!! My 12 year old neighbor next door wants to read it. I told him I just had to read and review it first and it's all his after. :)

    1. You're so sweet! I bet both of you will love it!

  2. I like the tease of Roald Dahl for this book-that's a flattering comparison! I also like the sound of the story in general. I'd seen this around but hadn't really investigated it so I didn't realize how "me" the books sounds.

    1. definitely has some Roald Dahl moments -- I thought.
Let me know what you think!

  3. I'm kind of excited about this one. I may go on a middle grade binge soon and this will definitely be on my list if I do.

    1. It was so much fun to read all these middle grade books!

  4. Gross and Gory, YES! That means my 9 yr.old will love it:)

    1. I definitely think this will appeal to boys and girls -- always a plus!

  5. This one sounds really cute, too! Candy math? Um, that sounds awesome! Although I'm not a fan of gross and gory, so we'll see... ;)

    1. It's not that gross. Well, one thing. I think you'll be fine.
