Freebie Friday 22: Halloween Edition

Welcome to Freebie Friday: Halloween Edition!

I love Halloween. The chance to pretend you're someone else for a night is so much fun.

Then there's the candy! I buy mine at the very last minute so I don't eat all of it. And my kids know that I sneak into their rooms when they're asleep and steal the Almond Joys out of their little plastic pumpkins. In my defense, they don't even like coconut!

I also love scary books and movies. Well, those that aren't TOO scary. My preference is for ghosts and witches.

My perfect Halloween movie marathon:

Halloween (1978) Yes, this is technically a horror movie. But because it's so old-school, I can handle it.

perfect not too scary movie marathon

Ghost Busters (1984) A little comic interlude. This one is such a classic! Symmetrical book stacking! Ghosts with OCD -- that's the kind of ghost I'll be.

Silence of the Lambs (1991) This is also borderline too scary for me, but it's such a great movie. Usually, when a movie is made from a book, I think the book is better, but in this case I think the movie might be! Clariiiiiice!  I get chills just thinking about it!

So, for a chance to win your choice of one these scary books AND a zombie finger puppet:

Dearly Departed by Lia Habel (zombies!)
This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers (even more zombies!)
Haunting Violet by Alexandra Harvey (ghosts and seances!)
Velveteen by Daniel Marks (a vengeful goth ghost girl!)
Break My Heart 1000 Times by Daniel Waters (ghosts and a serial killer!)

... give me your favorite Halloween confession in comments. Tell me about:
  • the best costume you ever wore OR
  • what candy you can't get enough of OR
  • what movie/book scares the pants off you!
Open internationally. Accepting entries until Sunday at 8 am EST.

And don't miss the chance to enter my Halloween Spooktacular Blog Hop Giveaway!  MORE scary books to win and more finger puppets up for grabs....

Here's the Google Doc so you can leave an email -- if your comment links to an account/blog/page that has an email link, the zombies and I will find you. Heh heh heh....

  1. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one of the scary/creepy books I've read this year, I kept my head looking from side to side, because I sense there is something supernatural around me cos I am the only one in our house that time, and the book gave me shiversss.

  3. I can't do the really scary thrasher type movies. Gah! All that blood and gore. Yuck! I do like suspense movies like Silence of the Lambs. Though.

My favorite costume was a couple years ago I dressed up as the devil in a red dress and my husband was an angel, complete with white wings. Which is so far from our personalities. I'd love to redo it and make him a fallen angel in all black.

I always steal all the Reeses Pieces and anything with dark chocolate. Well actually my girls just hand it over at this point.

    1. I'm with you. Too much gore means I can't even eat popcorn while I'm watching.

I LOVE paired costumes like that. Unfortunately I can never convince my husband to go along with my wacky costume schemes.

Yeah, at this point, my kids just hand over the coconut. Cause they know it's pointless to try to keep me away from it!

  4. Mmmmm. Coconut! I'm the only one in my family that likes coconut to so I always got all the mounds and almond joys!

I'm not a huge fan of scary movies (I'm a wuss), but I do LOVE The Ring. It doesn't matter how often I watch it it scares the living hell out of me. Just thinking about that girl crawling out of the TV gives me goosebumps. It was made worse because the first time I saw it I was still living at home, and I had a TV in my room, right across from my bed. I didn't sleep good for weeks!

My least favorite scary movie of all time is The Blair Witch project. I remember it being scary at first, but once they came out that it was fake, the movie then became really lame.

  6. The Ring did scare me when I first saw it. That creepy girl climbing out of the TV! Any scary movie involving kids gets my heart pumping. I find children extremely creepy! Like in Insidious and paranormal Activity 3! Freddy used to scare me when I was little and the Penguin from Batman because he ate a cat! I was very upset since I love cats. Candy anything chocolate, crunch bars, twix, kit cats, anything with caramel, and I also love sour punch straws and pop rocks! I love all my costumes. I was a grim reaper, nerd, french maid, nurse, firer woman, gladiator, and vampire. I love the teeth! The guy that dress up as a night stand and are a one night stand always crack me up! I just love Halloween!

But my favorite costume was way back when I was around 12 and completely obsessed with Grease. haha I was a pink lady and pretty much died of happiness when I found that costume. Today they're everywhere, but at the time they were kind of rare, so me finding it was like, the greatest thing ever. haha

  11. My best costumes were some Disney princesses-I had amazingly detailed Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella costumes. Nowadays the costumes always look really cheap, not super accurate, and have the princess's face on them. Not mine-they are very very similar to what is shown on-screen. Yes, I have them saved for the daughters I hope to have some day!

Halloween is my favorite time of year, besides Christmas, so I love all the decorations and pumpkin picking, etc. As for the candy? Yeah I pretty much love it all. LOL But my faves are snickers, twix, reese's peanut butter cups and three musketeers. Oh and baby ruths. (See, I told you I loved it all!) You can have all my almond joys though, because I don't like coconut. :)

Some movies that have seriously scared the Hades out of me are The Grudge, The Ring, and The Fourth Kind (and this one it was only because I THOUGHT it was based like on a true story or something). 21. I love Halloween!I'm going to go with the best costume, but technically I didn't wear it, my best friend at the time did, and it made for a very funny night. She made herself into a dictionary, but because of the cardboard she couldn't walk well and I had to go up all steps for her. Later that night we were walking and she stumbled and fell into a ditch. We couldn't stop laughing because of it, but she ended up being okay. We had to wrestle her out of the costume to help her out too.

I think it's the eerie music and the creepy mask! As far as books, I just bought the Mara Dyer books, so I'm going to give them a try.

So, I hate to admit this but I am SUCH a little girl when it comes to scary movies, but I loooove scary books. I generally get freaked out by most scary movies but man, if the movie features some scary crawling creepy girls (like in "The Ring") then I'm probably about to pee myself. Heh Heh.

  27. Jen, I was so proud of myself the other night because I watched one of the Halloween movies..at night...by myself (minus my husband snoring on the couch which is scary in itself). Afterwards, I had to watch something funny to offset the scary, even though it wasn't too bad. I cannot for anything watch Freddy Kreuger. No way!
After trick or treating, I am like the Candy Police because I go through everyone's and pick out what I like to put in a bowl high up so they can't reach it (usually I have a hard time too since I am so short lol).

    1. I love that so many people are afraid of clowns. Last summer a friend and I went to stay with our other friend at a house she rented. There were three of us and I said I didn't care which bedroom I had. I was getting ready for bed and my friend came running in all freaked out and asked if I'd switch rooms with her. I said, sure, whatever, and she showed me this adult-sized clown costume hanging in the closet of the room she picked. I thought it was sort of hilarious but it freaked her out so much that she couldn't sleep in that room.
Now I tease her all the time about evil clowns.... I wish I'd taken a picture of it.

  37. My favorite costume was from high school when I went as Rosemary from Rosemary's Baby with short blonde hair and a little fake belly, running around creaming about the devil. Granted, no one really got it but I got to wear a really sweet Mod little black dress and shoes and I love the movie so it was a win for me.

The book that gives me the worst creeps is Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and Other Stories. I like to read it every winter when cabin fever is just starting to set in. The Lottery is probably the best known story, along with the Haunting of Hill House and and We Have Always Lived in The Castle but the lesser known stories have an ever deeper feelings of paranoia, desperation, and confusion with some of the best examples of unreliable narration.

  56. Well, at the time of wearing it (I think I was about...11), I thought my batgirl costume was amazing and definitely the best one I'd ever worn. I even had a sparkly bat belt! Looking back however...it was a poorly made, poorly fitting and generally terrible outfit and the only bat-like things about it were the belt/waistband and bat ears headband! :P

  58. I do not love watching scary movies that much, because I can get scared very easily. So the scariest movie that I have ever watches was The Ring. The girl just freaked me out, and I seriously could not sleep at night.

  61. I can't handle Silence of the Lambs! Did you know that Jodi Foster had nightmares from acting in that movie? Love Ghost Busters. I don't really watch scary movies anymore. Signs gave me nightmares for a while and I was old and married! What Lies Beneath scarred me a little bit since I went home by myself from the theater to a dark and quiet house. A little spooky! :)

  62. The scariest movie I ever saw was WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (1979 version). You don't see one drop of blood, but I had to sleep with the light on for a week. I don't like scary movies - they scare me.

  65. The movie that scares me the most is Stephen King's It. I am so scared by that movie that I always end up sleeping with my mom if my family decides to watch it. I just can't do clowns like seriously I can't do clowns like every time I used to go trick or treating and saw someone dressed as a clown I would purposely go down another street. Me + Clowns = NOPE!

Oh and favorite candy I can't get enough of is Reese's Pieces Peanut Butter Cups. I ended up buying 4 giant bags of them from the store just for myself XD Ahhaa I love Halloween my favorite candy is on sale in such a large quantity.

  66. One year when I was about 16 years old I could not come up with a great Halloween costume. I did not feel like wearing something I did the past year so I ended up going to a halloween shop and buying a funny yet kinda odd looking mask. It was a old wrinkled grandma with a babushka hat. I wore a robe and slippers. Every house I stopped at, or most of them would sing:

    Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
    Make me a match,
    Find me a find,
    catch me a catch...

I was totally embarrassed to say the least.

My favorite candy is...well, anything chocolate really. :) Especially chocolate + peanut butter. Reese's peanut butter cups, peanut butter M&Ms, those Lindt peanut butter truffle things. Mmmm, peanut butter & chocolate!

  76. I have to say that my best ever Halloween costumes were when I was little. Like, my first ever Halloween costume I was a chocolate kiss and my Dad was my big Hershey bar. (You know how much cuteness and convincing it must have taken to get a six foot three lawyer ex baseball/basketball player into a hershey bar costume? A lot!) My second favorite was when I went as a slice of pizza in kindergarten. My face hole was a piece of pepperoni. Sort of ironic since I've been a vegetarian for over 10 years. lol
