Freebie Friday 23: Desert Island Books

Welcome to Freebie Friday!

Watching the news about Hurricane Sandy over the past week got me thinking about disaster preparation and go-bags and life essentials.  So here is today's question:
If, on a moment's notice, you had to grab a work of fiction* that would best amuse and inspire you over an extended period of time -- a book you wouldn't mind reading and re-reading and re-re-reading, what book would it be?
*For these purposes, I'll exclude non-fiction and religious texts, though I realize that some people might choose to grab those as well!

Lately I've been complaining about overly long books, but I think in this case, I'll change my tune. Here are my top three picks, in no particular order:

1. The Odyssey. Not only would this take a while to read, it's got everything --adventure, suspense, heartbreak and romance.

2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I never get tired of this one -- the wit, the family drama, the starcrossed love...

3. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly.  This YA book also has so much packed into it. It's a story about a girl who lost her brother, about the French Revolution, about hope and grief and loss.

Yes, since I couldn't narrow it down to one, you can give me a list. I never overpack on trips ...  except for books.

What am I giving away today? The winner's choice of one of these ARCs:

Blind Spot by Laura Ellen
Entice by Jessica Shirvington
Beta by Rachel Cohn
If I Lie by Corrine Jackson
Something Like Normal by Trish Dollar
Speechless by Hannah Harrington
Time Between Us by Tamara Ireland Stone

  1. I would probably grab "Willow" by Julia Hoban. I've read it about 3 times and each time, its like I'm reading it for the first time

  2. I was going to be smart-ass and say that I would grab my iPad loaded with books and movies...but then the battery would probably die pretty fast...

So I think I'll go with The Host by Stephanie Meyer. That book is pretty thick and I think I've re-read it no less than 20 times already. :P

    1. Grabbing the iPad is a great idea, but I think you need an old-school book too.

I've been wanting to read the Host!

  3. I haven't read any of your choices! Honestly, if I could pack a book, or a few, it would probbaly be the Harry Potter series. I could, and used to, read those over and over on repeat. Especially the last few books.

    1. I was going to pick Harry Potter but I couldn't decide which book to pick. My favorites are probably Goblet of Fire or Prisoner of Azkaban.

  4. I would choose The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory! It's like 600 pages long, and just amazing. Ooooh, I've got another one: Little Women. My all-time favorite classic. I think I would actually take Little Women over Boleyn Girl

    1. Little Women is a great choice. I did that as a readaloud with my daughter recently and it took quite a while.

  6. Ha, I always overpack when it comes to books, even though I also take my ereader, too. You can never be too prepared, right? Um, I like Bookworm's answer of the complete works of Jane Austen. But if I were going to go with some of my more recent reads, I'd have to pick some fantasy (DoSaB, TGoFaT) and my new fave contemp Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill. :) Also, how have I not read Revolution yet? I even have it sitting on my shelf. The very fact that you would choose it as a desert island book means I need to read it ASAP.

    ReplyDelete
  7. This is a tough one. Obviously any of the Harry Potter books would be a great choice. I have re-read those over and over. Maybe The Host by Stephanie Meyers. It's a long book, but I really liked it. Or Deity by JLA. I just finished it and want to read it over and over again.

While all that helps, none of it gets people back in their homes. It really makes you appreciate just having a roof over your head with food and electricity and water...

    1. I agree -- that book is such an intricately written and interesting book that I wouldn't mind re-reading it!

God, that's a whole lot! I can't really decide! I'd prally bring classics like Jane Eyre and Anna Karenina... SO HARD TO DECIDE. :) haha

  75. it's too hard to choose. i would be the crazy girl and try to grab every book off my shelve( which let me tell you is a lot) i love them all.

  76. Aaaah I would probably sweep all the books of the shelves and cry that I can only take one! Maybe Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian or Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys..those two books are timeless and I LOVE THEM TO BITS!

    1. I did read Between Shades of Gray and agree -- that would be a very inspirational book. Have not read the other!

  77. My first thought were the Harry Potter books. To narrow it down further, I would go with either #4, #6, or #7.

  78. I'd probably choose The Giver by Lois Lowry. I've read that book over and over and love it more every time I read it : )

  79. I totally laughed about your overpacking of books. I do that, too! Sometimes half my suitcase is books... opps!

    1. Yes, my husband always grumbles about that. Not only is my suitcase heavy, I usually have to buy some clothes!

  80. I'd probably bring Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I've had it forever, but it's so long it feels like a big commitment to start reading it.

  81. I would choose The picture of Dorian Gray =] It is one of the books I've most reread in my entire life XD

    Thanks for the giveaway =]]]

  82. OH I'm the same way. I'm always afraid I will change my mind and won't have other options. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly is really good, by the way. I think if I was gonna grab a great read that I wouldn't mind having to read and re-read, I would choose something with action and romance. Some picks might be the Discovery of Witches series or Divergent and Matched series... However, having a series, I guess, defeats the purpose of packing lightly. Possibly, Legend by Marie Lu. The sequel isn't out yet haha.. Oh well, it would be very hard to pick one.

  83. I know how this is going to sound but, I fell in love with this series and read it many many times. Twilight...I know! It was the fist YA book about any kind of supernatural stuff. It kind of opened my eyes to these awesome books. So I kind of have a soft spot for it. My copy of Twilight has been read so many times it may fall apart soon haha! Thanks for the chance to win!

  85. What happened to so many people on the eastern coast is tragic. My heart goes out to them. I have family there, but thankfully, they are all okay. They just lost power for a few days. They were one of the lucky ones.
I would have to choose Graceling or Fire by Krsitin Cashore. I absolutely loved them and think they could definitely keep me entertained! ;)
Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

  86. I've read all your picks, except Revolution. I'll have to get to that one soon. I'd probably say something in the Percy Jackson, series? Maybe that's just me, though? :D

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  87. Probably either one of the Harry Potter or Vampire Academy books :)

  88. I honestly don't think I would be thinking about books, but if by chance I actually did I think I just grab a few without looking, make sure my family was ready to go and taken care of, and get the h-e-double hockey sticks outta dodge. Hopefully I would be happy with my hasty choices once I got to a place where I could actually read them.

  89. This is a hard one. I always overpack books and clothes, you never know when you'll run out of books to read that you brought with you. I'll pick three:
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (that's my most favourite HP book, I already re-read it a few times, and I could do it again and again, (although Deathly Hallows is pretty close). Another one is one of the Lux books by JLA, I just finished Onyx a few days ago and I can't wait for the third book to release, which is going to be pretty soon. And my last choice is one of the Vampire Academy books maybe, Frostbite or Shadow Kiss.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

    1. Oooh, good point. I have never read the Iron Fey series. I can't decide if picking a new book for this purpose is a good idea or not. What if I didn't like it??

  91. I'd definitely take Harry Potter, maybe #3 & 7, if I had to narrow it down. Also the complete Jane Austen works, so I wouldn't have to decide. And Anna and te French Kiss, because I love Anna and Etienne!
    Thanks :-)
