Questions, I Have Questions….
So, full disclosure: I have only read books one through three of The Mortal Instruments. It's kind of a funny story. I had just finished a marathon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- ALL the episodes -- and I was feeling kind of blah. So I went to the bookstore and asked the bookseller, "What would a person who likes Buffy read?" And they gave me City of Bones. I didn't even really think of it as YA. I read City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass as they came out, and then I guess I got sidetracked reading other stuff...
This past weekend I re-read Clockwork Angel and read Clockwork Prince. Sometimes there's nothing better than a series binge read -- it's so much fun! I think I love the Infernal Devices series even more then TMI, even though TMI is set in my beloved New York City. I'm crazy about the Victorian London setting in The Infernal Devices and I've grown really fond of all the characters. So, here's what I'm looking forward to finding out in The Clockwork Princess. There are no big spoilers for the first two books in my questions, but there may be in comments, so beware!
Who (or what) is Tessa?
We know Tessa can shapeshift, but she doesn't have a demon mark. Is she part Shadowhunter too? Mortmain said some weird stuff about having "made" her. Is she the result of some kind of experiment that Mortmain did? Is Mortmain her father?
Is either Will or Jem going to die in The Clockwork Princess?
I love A Tale of Two Cities, and all the references to that book are really making me think that there will be death and sacrifice in this book. I'm working on a post on Dickens and other literary references in the books, but it's taking me a while. We'll see…
Is Tessa going to choose Will or Jem? Or neither? Or is the choice going to be taken out of her hands?
I'm thinking the latter. I think a choice will be made, but it won't be her picking one guy and rejecting the other. That's just my feeling. In a future post I may make a completely out-there prediction about what I think will happen in Clockwork Princess.

Pretty much yes to all what you are saying. I also think there is going to be a death and sacrifice. Who are for what, I have no idea yet. Too many theories go through my head at one time. I didn't even place the connection to The Tale of Two Cities but that really sounds like something Cassie would do.
ReplyDeleteI also think Tessa's decision will most likely be taken out of her hands. But I really have no idea what she is. I think she'll be surprised with something she can do (what we talked about last night) but really still have no idea. Excited to find out though!
Yep, Tale of Two Cities is repeatedly mentioned in the trilogy and there's a BIG sacrifice at the end of that one...
DeleteI have the same two questions: What exactly is Tessa and how was she "made" and who will she end up with? I also think the choice might be taken out of her hands, but things could change. Jem's fate is pretty much decided for him but Clare does twists rather well.So who really knows? It looks like there will be so much going on in this third book! I can see Tessa having some pivotal part to play. I'm excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteI think Jem could be cured. Who knows? And I LOVE me a good twist, so I am so ready….
DeleteMy most burning question? What's going to happen?! There is so much going on in the first two books, there are so many questions that need answers. I've debated rereading the first two books before Clockwork Princess, because I know I've forgotten stuff. But I don't know yet, the last chapters of Clockwork Prince are so emotional! I think Tessa will have her decision made for her, I think someone will die, I think there will be twists and surprises that I can't even imagine, and I think it will be a big roller coaster ride. I can't wait to find the answers about Tessa. Where did she come from? And I'm really looking forward to the rest of your posts! :-)
ReplyDeleteYep, roller coaster ride!!
DeleteI agree that the decision being taken out of her hands in regards to Will or Jem would be the ideal. I'm really hoping nobody dies. That aggravates me when someone is martyred. Plus I LOVE Jem and he seems the likely choice for that to happen to.
ReplyDeleteYes, but that's exactly why it might not happen. Who knows….
DeleteI haven't read these yet so I'm not reading the other comments! *hands over eyes* no spoilers! I am curious about the front cover -- the lighted book, 'clockwork'...knowing that it's set in London...I'd love to win a copy and start reading!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read them either! I have the whole series up to Clockwork Angel, but I don't want to have to re-read that many books so I haven't started them yet. :)
DeleteYou will love this trilogy!!!
DeleteI have book 1 and i noticed that they have book 2 at the library so I should really read these all in one go now! :)
ReplyDeleteYep, now is the perfect time!!
DeleteJem or Will. That's my answer to the 'What I can't wait to find out' question. Always has been since the first book =)
ReplyDeleteI think it will be way more complicated than Tessa just choosing between the two of them!
DeleteI cannot wait for your Dickens post. I'm WORRIED about this end b/c she's called it a loose retelling of Tale of Two Cities, which means that ONE will DIE and that ONE will most likely be WILL. Or at least in my head it means that. Not that I want Jem to die either!! I have no idea what will happen, but I definitely want to know who/what Tessa is (definitely some sort of "changeling - I have a big theory on this). Something BIG is going to happen in the romance, because as it stands Tessa will marry Jem and even if he dies, I don't think that Will and she would get together - because of their love and honor for Jem. I could definitely see her choice being taken away, but I hope it's not done in a way that is a cop-out. I have a lot of faith in CC, and am really hopeful especially after being CRUSHED by that other recent triangle series that I loved until the last book and am still not over. ANYWAY, loving these posts.
ReplyDeleteSo happy we emailed because I LOVE your theory.
DeleteAck, I'm getting so nervous!!
What is Tessa!? I have been wondering that too! Isn't there some reference to children in one of the MI books that could be one of hers, maybe with Jem/Will? She can't procreate if she is a demon lady (I think). AND THEN...which guy is going to die? I am totally Team Will, because I am a sucker for guilty and tortured. Jem is great and all but meh. I can't imagine that CC will allow it to be a simple choice between either dude. She never does, seeing as she was willing to throw incest into the mix for her other series just to keep her character's apart (it worked, don't get me wrong). This is going to get messy.
ReplyDeleteAw, poor Jem is pretty tortured too.
DeleteI hope it's not too messy….
Thanks for the giveaway! I have a million questions, so I'll just say one. Can Will's sister be trusted?
ReplyDelete-Cali W.
Ooh ….I hadn't even thought of that one!!
DeleteI know it is super cliche but I really want to know Jem or Will?
ReplyDeleteIt is SUCH an important question. Or will it be neither??
DeleteI read something saying that the ID series is loosely a retelling of sorts of A Tale of Two Cities. Anyways, I don't think Tessa will end up with either, but like you said, I don't think it will be a choice that she makes, but something she has to do. I worry about Will, especially after what happened at the end of Clockwork Prince. I don't think he will do anything to himself, but I think he will not care what might happen to him and will sacrifice himself if needed.
ReplyDeleteI really want to know what exactly Tessa is and I want to know what is with her angel pendant. I think that it what I want to know the most because the Will/Jem thing is going to be tragically sad no matter how it goes. Whether she ends up with neither or either of them is going to be heartbreaking to me.
I'm kind of wondering if she'll end up with neither. She says something about not wanting to ever sever them one from the other.
DeleteAnd, yes, the necklace!
I haven't read the ID series, so I'm anxious to find out everything! I love the covers of these books, and the synopsis sounds like I'll love the story as well. I'm also a huge Buffy fan. :D
ReplyDeleteI think that the Mortal Instruments series is probably a little more like Buffy, but I LOVE the Infernal Devices even more...
DeleteI'm really warming up to this series more and more. I just love the era so much. Definitely eager to see where it goes!
ReplyDeleteI'm nervous...
DeleteI am wondering who she will end up with, of course!
ReplyDeleteMe too -- eeep!
DeleteThere was something that was so addicting and purely AMAZING about the construction of this world.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am preparing myself for imminent death by CP2. Call me if you need extra tissues. I've been stocking up.
That's who bought all the tissues!!!
DeleteThanks. I may need them!
Just got the first book and absolutely cannot wait to read Clockwork Princess. I love Cassandra Clare! Love, love, love her books.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited and nervous. Like going on a roller coaster.
DeleteWhat will happen to Jem, Mortmain is..., and Will, and Cecily. A LOT! I just want to get my hands on it!!!
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot to wrap up!
DeleteI can't wait to see if Jem makes it...I have been freaking out a little bit because he is my favorite character and he's sick and well it just doesn't seem likely that he will get a happily ever after! I am also excited to meet Will's sister and see the role she will play in CP2.
ReplyDeleteI am very fond of Jem and I don't want anything to happen to him.
DeleteI haven't read past the first three books in TMI either. The series seemed done to me after that. I started to read the fourth book, but it just didn't catch my attention. The characters that I was SO in love with started to seem whiny and annoying to me so I put the book down immediately and haven picked it back up since. I am, however, completely obsessed with the Infernal Devices series. I have so many questions I can't even write them all down, although your questions were a good start to my list! Clockwork Prince went above and beyond with answering all of my burning questions about Will and still left me with more questions somehow! It's crazy! So super excited for Clockwork Princess and I'm so loving these posts!!
ReplyDeleteJesse @ Pretty In Fiction
Glad you're enjoying them. Me too!
DeleteI'm dying to know whether or not Magnus will be in The Clockwork Princess. I hope so. :D
ReplyDeleteLOVE him!
Deletei can't remember all the details. I need to reread them. I can't think of a question to ask. I can't imagine liking The Infernal Devices more than TMI!
ReplyDeleteWell, they are sort of connected. And I'm just in love with the whole Victorian London thing...
DeleteFollowing on the choice question, something that occurred to me today...if the wedding occurs as planned, is Cassie cruel enough to kill off the boy and then reveal that Tessa is pregnant, as her way of saying Tess is not a warlock, etc?? I think she would be cruel enough and even the thought of it makes my feels explode D:
ReplyDeleteI saw that theory online -- they were calling it the Pearl Harbor theory, after the movie, which I haven't seen...
DeleteI admit- I did not read Clockwork Prince yet, though I'm guessing I should soon. XD So I kinda freaked when I read something about Tessa shapeshifting- I don't remember that from the first book!
ReplyDeleteAs for the love triangle... I think she's going with Will. Isn't that how Cassie writes her love triangles? (Again, haven't read CP yet, so there might have been something huge there.) I like Jem more anyway, so she can have Will. ;)
LOL -- you need to re-read!!
DeleteHi! I just found your blog and I love it! :D The thing I care the most is about the posible death of Will or Jem D: I can allow myself thinking that, it's so painful!! I think that Tessa is sort of an experiment I'm not sure of what exactly and of course I want to know what happen with EVERYBODY there are so many characters I want to know about :(
ReplyDeleteThanks so much :)
DeleteThere is SO MUCH to be resolved...
I NEED to catch up with this series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I bought them... I just need to figure out where I put them. Too many makeshift bookshelves.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have books stacked vertically and sideways and every which way!
DeleteMy biggest thing is, Tessa is immortal. So, whomever she ends up with, she'll outlive. That doesn't seem to bother Magnus with Alec, but Tessa is soft-hearted, and I don't know that she can handle that grief knowingly. I mean, I guess that old adage about being happy with the time you have holds true, but still. Poor, poor Tessa. But I want her to make a clear choice, not have it taken from her.
ReplyDeleteThat is true. So maybe she will choose neither one….
DeleteWho she ends up with :)
ReplyDeleteI think everyone is so focused on "Jem or Will" that it might be some other outcome all together. We'll see!
DeleteYour three are definitely my top questions as well! But I'm most dying to know what exactly Tessa is--I've been coming up with millions of theories as I've read the series :)
ReplyDeleteLauren (above in comments) has a really interesting theory!
DeleteI've not read this series yet, but I definitely want to! So I'd like to know more about the plot without spoilers =)
ReplyDeleteThere won't be huge spoilers until book three. The first two books just raise about a million questions, and none of us know the answers.
DeleteHaven't read this yet but would love too..Tina M
ReplyDeleteYou will love it!
DeleteI think Tessa was genetically alter when she was a baby by Mortmain and he experimented on her much like with Jace and Clary in TMI series. Tessa probably was born a shadow hunter and his experiments caused all of her other abilities.
ReplyDeleteAs far as one of those boys dying, I can't think of that...it's too sad!
I can't wait to read this book!
That was my theory at first, but I'm liking Lauren's theory (in comments above)
DeleteI'm absolutely dying to know who Tessa will choose, because I love both Jem and Will! Only Cassandra Clare could do that to me. Also, what is Tessa, exactly? I have a bunch of theories!
ReplyDeleteI have one favorite theory on the Tessa thing.
DeleteI can't wait to find out if Tessa will end up with Will or Jem. I love both boys, so my heart will break a little whoever she chooses.
ReplyDeleteI love them both too…..
DeleteJust finished the Immortal Instruments and am diving right into this awesome series. So I guess I want to know everything that's going on.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I really, really wish I knew. I can't imagine any scenario which could lead to a happy ending for everyone (and my happy ending consists of Will and Tessa getting married and living happily ever after). Because Tessa won't break it off with Jem; and there's the whole ToTW reference thing. And Will wouldn't try to take Tessa from Jem, because he loves Jem too much. And one of them has to die. But Tessa wouldn't end up with Will if Jem died, but she would still marry Jem is Will died.
ReplyDeleteI JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE HECK IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN GENERAL.
I have wayyyyy too many feelings about this whole series, and I cried myself to sleep the night I finished Clockwork Prince, and ALL MY FEELS NEED TO BE SATISFIED.
I would love to know exactly what Tessa is, I know Clare gives us hints but its still not enough to go on, that and if there is anything going on between Gideon and Sophie :)
ReplyDeleteI have to confess that I have read neither The Mortal Instruments series nor The Infernal Devices series!! I already own some of them and they are on my TBR pile but...too many books, and not enough time!
ReplyDeleteI just want to know what all the fuss is about!
I just need to read the first book again, then the second book. I have no idea what in the world is going on with the series. I am very curious to find out if it is Jem or Will!
