Poison by Bridget Zinn

My summary: Kyra is on the run, accused of trying to poison her former best friend Arianna-- who also happens to be a princess who's heir to the kingdom's throne. Now on the run with an adorable piglet tucked under her arm and an adorable guy named Fred tagging along, Kyra must evade the king's guards and finish the job she started.
My take: What a charming book! If you're looking for something that's pure fun to read, look no further. Poison is filled with whimsical humor, a touch of suspense, and a sweet romance. It's completely appropriate for readers of all ages, from tween to adult.
Kyra is a spirited heroine, as she skulks around the countryside, evading her pursuers and picking up new human and animal companions as she goes. She seems completely unrepentant about the fact that she's on the run for attempting to assassinate her best friend, Princess Arianna. It was a lot of fun to try to figure out exactly what was going on and what Kyra was really up to. Was she really a murderer? There were a couple twists and and ending that will put a smile on your face. No nerve-fraying cliffhangers here!
Poison has a lot of elements that will appeal to fans of fairy tales and light fantasy: magical potions, scheming royals, disguises, and even adorable animals. I'd recommend it to fans of books like Ella Enchanted and movies like Shrek.
I'd like to say that I am looking forward to future books by Bridget Zinn, but sadly, she died of cancer in 2011. I'm so sorry she is not here to enjoy the success of her book, but her sense of fun and whimsy shines through on every page.
I loved this book and, like you, was looking forward to future books form her, but will only have this one to cherish. I know it was originally meant to be a series and then was altered with her passing. But man, will she live on in a story so sweet.
ReplyDeleteI liked this book but I'll admit that I did want something extra although I'm struggling how to describe it in my review. There are a lot of fun elements (and wasn't Rosie sweet?) but something was lacking for me.
ReplyDeleteI liked this book but didn't think it was spectacular. I gave it three stars. I felt like it should have been more geared towards middle grade, but the character were YA age.
ReplyDeleteI agree - this did feel like very young YA to me, but I really enjoyed it!
DeleteThis is on my wish list. Sounds perfect like me and just like THE SWEETEST SPELL hint hint.
ReplyDeleteVery sad about the author. There's a CBA trilogy called Tahn. It's a romantic fantasy and I LOVED it. The author died, in a car crash, I think, and it's so sad.
I almost started reading this last night, but then chose a different book that I have been requested to review first. This sounds like my kind of book, which is what I was hoping for. Now I really can't wait to read it! It is so sad about the author, especially when she obviously had more to write.
ReplyDeleteI am just finising this and I have to say that I thought it was great too! So sad that the author has died! I hope she knows that we're all enjoying her book :)
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about this book. It was too cute and I loved the character of Fred and Rosie, too. I am definitely putting a copy of this in my classroom library. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how this one turns out when I read it! Also, I'm back to blogging so I'll be commenting on your posts again!
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading!
Well, this sounds really like fun! I've been wanting to read lighter books lately, with so many dark YA books. This reminds me of Poison Study, but in a different way. And yeah, I wanna read about the piglet. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry about the author though. That really sucks. Who knew, she could've become one of my favorite authors or a bestselling one!
This book sounds so good! I was so sad when I heard the author passed away, but she'll live on in this book. Can't wait to read it :)

This does sound like a cute read! So sad about the author. I'm sure she would have loved to see this book hit shelves. :(
ReplyDeleteFairytales! Definitely a book for me then ;) The twists and ending sound good. I felt so sad when I read that the author passed away a while ago. It's a shame she can't enjoy her success :(

Yes! I'm totally going to buy this book! I have heard amazing reviews on it. I really wish the author could see her dream come true.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so good. I'm glad you liked it. It's one I'm definitely planning to get to.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this book. I think it fit well with the Disney theme and should be made into a movie. It did feel more like a MG read. I'm always sad when I read about Zinn, and her struggle with fighting and eventually succumbing to Cancer.
