Waiting on Wednesday: Second Star

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

What am I waiting on this week? Oh, so many things :) But here's one…

Second Star
By Alyssa B. Sheinmel
To be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
in May 2014

The scoop: A twisty story about love, loss, and lies, this contemporary oceanside adventure is tinged with a touch of dark magic as it follows seventeen-year-old Wendy Darling on a search for her missing surfer brothers. Wendy’s journey leads her to a mysterious hidden cove inhabited by a tribe of young renegade surfers, most of them runaways like her brothers. Wendy is instantly drawn to the cove’s charismatic leader, Pete, but her search also points her toward Pete's nemesis, the drug-dealing Jas. Enigmatic, dangerous, and handsome, Jas pulls Wendy in even as she's falling hard for Pete. A radical reinvention of a classic, Second Star is an irresistible summer romance about two young men who have yet to grow up--and the troubled beauty trapped between them.

My take:  I'm a big fan of Alyssa Sheinmel's writing, which is spare and beautiful. It seems to me that all her books have magical or fairy tale elements -- in fact, I asked her about this when  I interviewed her back in 2012 -- so I'm excited to read her modern day retelling of Peter Pan…

What are you waiting on? Let me know in comments and leave me a link so I can visit you back :)

  1. Interesting to take on Peter Pan! I remember seeing Tiger Lily but I don't think many people have dared to take on PP otherwise. I am nervous about the potential for love triangle so I'll definitely want to see some reviews before I try it myself.

I really like this author's writing, so I'm in. I'll let you know what I think!

  2. I haven't read Peter Pan (shocking, I know) nor have I seen any movies - animated or otherwise. It'll be interesting to read the version she came up with, for sure.

  5. At first I just liked the cover but you had me at Peter Pan. I used to be against retelling of Peter Pan because in my mind the Disney version was canon but after watching Peter Pan on Once Upon a Time, I find myself wanting more adaptations and retelling.
