Extra! Extra! End of the Year Reading

Extra! Extra! is my weekend post featuring brand new additions to my TBR pile as well as a summary of what's new on the blog.

This weekend I'm linking to Stacking the Shelves @ Tynga's Reviews or to Sunday Post hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

First off, I have some great giveaways going:

Best Books of 2013 Giveaway Hop!

and my annual Favorite Books of 2013 Freebie Friday. This will be in three parts, with multiple chances to enter, and I've created a new category. This week is not new -- My Favorite YA Contemporary and Historical books of 2013.

New Books:
I don't think I got any new review books, but I did buy The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt:

I've been wanting to read it and I just went to see the painting the title refers to, which is one of a collection of paintings on loan to the Frick from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Netherlands -- Girl With a Pearl Earring is also there.

But … The Goldfinch is 700+ pages long and I still have 8 books left to read to make my Goodreads challenge. We'll see how busy the next couple of weeks turn out to be...

  1. Good luck with your challenge-I hardly read anything this week and am way behind (need to read 17 books in 16 days) :( However today is my birthday (!) and I'm hoping to make up some ground and schedule some posts for this upcoming week. Love the giveaways as they are a great way to wrap up 2013!

  2. I hadn't heard of The Goldfinch before but it sounds good! I do try and shy away from long books then when I'm crunched for time. I've got 5 books to go on my Goodreads Challenge so I'm feeling you on that last little time crunch.

  4. Good luck with Goldfinch! Think I'll leave this till 2014! I can't remember if it was this one or The Luminaries but I read somewhere that an Australian DJ was trying to make a point about the length of some of these books and he actually cut it in half!! Can you imagine?? Made me feel all icky reading that!

  10. That cover is really cool!! I have never heard of this book before though. I guess I will have to wait for your review to see if I think it's something I would like. And by the way, no need to apologize for not commenting. I have been really awful at it. I apologize to you! I still love your blog, I just haven't had as much time to stalk it.

  12. 700 pages at the end of a year is a too big adventure even for me. Nevertheless, I've heard great things about Tartt's Secret History so this one must be outstanding as well.
    Happy reading, Jen!
