Trending Thursday -- my periodic weekly post in which I discuss a trend I've noticed in YA -- is back this week with two new cover trends.
First off, I was organizing my ARC shelf the other day and noticed this:
Althea and Oliver by Cristina Moracho (Viking, Oct 2014)
Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer (Dutton, Sept 2014)
Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley (Harlequin, Sept 2014)
My photo isn't the greatest, but even so, you can see that all these covers feature black and yellow. Two have black and white photos with yellow accents and cursive fonts, the other is a screaming yellow cover with black text and graphics.
I like these -- I think they stand out in the sea of YA covers. What do you think??
Then, perhaps inspired by this fantastic (and also yellow) non-YA cover:
I noticed these two covers for upcoming YA books:

The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things by Ann Aguirre (April 2015, Feiwel and Friends)
The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand (February 2015, Harper)
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven (January 2015, Random House)
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven (January 2015, Random House)
I'm kind of obsessed with Post-Its, so I love these too!
If you have any yellow and black or Post-It covers to add to my list, let me know!
I love the Queen of Bright and Shiny Things cover because post-it notes are part of the plot. I love when a cover matches the actual story!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there were so many post-it covers though lol
I liked the yellow/black combo at first but now I'm sick of it.

Ha -- if the book is about post-its too, I'm in!!
DeleteI love the post-its as well. It makes me think about things I can't forget (whoa).
ReplyDeleteI thought the second and third black and yellow covers were the same book and the cover had been redesigned. I really like those post-it covers, even if the Cynthia Hand one looks like a women's non-fiction cover...
ReplyDeleteI actually noticed the post-it notes covers recently too. I'm obsessed with stickies, so I love these! Lol
ReplyDeleteI love those covers with post-its! and they all look amazing!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have to add those to be TBR list! Thanks for sharing!
I love post-it's because they're awesome so seeing them on a cover would probably make me buy the book :)
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest, I don't like the yellow/black trend. I think I actually avoid books with that color scheme, something about that combination of colors...I dunno.
ReplyDeleteI DO like post its though. They have a very "contemporary" feel. Why? I don't know. Haha.

Post-in notes on covers seems really interesting, but well let's not push it too far. Black and yellow thing is not really pretty in my opinion, as I really don't like either color. So it's all me. Great post :)
ReplyDeleteI love post it's too. My family is very familiar with them. heheh. I have to have them on everything so I don't forget.
ReplyDeleteI love the post-its look! I haven't read anything that looks like those yet...but STILL. Lurve.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the yellow-and-black is quite popular, right?! More than This by Patrick Ness. And I just read The Sky So Heavy which is a grey book but has a freakishly bright yellow spine. And the UK/AUS version of Rebel by Amy Tintera is black/yellow too!
I love those trends you found! Post its are my favorite, haha! I saw that Cynthia hand book. Gonna wait and see the reviews before I read it though, I'm not big on contemporary.
ReplyDeleteI love looking at cover trends!
Oh that's awesome! I like how the yellow and black works on those covers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Jen! <33
I'm loving that yellow and green are starting to become more popular on covers - usually they all use similar color schemes, so nothing stands out in bookstores.
ReplyDeleteAdore the post-it covers! So fun :)
Yes, I have been seeing a lot of post it note covers and bright colors.
