The past few weeks -- months? -- have been a little hectic and that has impacted my reading. Lately, I'm tired and distracted and if a book doesn't grab my attention right off, I feel my mind wandering.
Here are the books I've tried over the last few days. Have you read any of these? Should I press on?
I'm not such a big fantasy reader and I see a love triangle brewing. I do like the writing, but something about this one feels a bit young to me...
The cover of this is so beautiful, but the first few chapters didn't grab me. So far, it seems too similar to Cinder. There's also a fight scene at the beginning (I like fight scenes in movies, but in books I find them sort of boring) and a girl trying to be tough. Space settings are not my favorite. I've seen some pretty harsh reviews for this one, but that actually makes me more curious, not less....
The fact that this one didn't grab me right off is strong evidence that it may be me, not these books. This one, set in the 1990s, seems tailor-made for me. And my friend Kate referenced Reality Bites when describing this and ... this should be a book I can love.
Any advice on anyof these? I think I will give all of them one more chance before I put them aside and move on...
You didn't finish Afterworlds either right? I keep debating if I should try that one.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said - I selfishly want you to read Stitching Snow because there's something in there that I want to talk to you about. lol

I didn't finish Afterworlds. It just wasn't for me. But I will try another of his books. I'd never read anything by him before...
DeleteDon't know about the other two, but Snow Like Ashes was amazing! So yeah, keep reading. Better yet, put it down until you're in the mood for fantasy.
ReplyDeleteHa -- I am rarely in that mood. I think that and Althea and Oliver I will re-try. Those seem to be the ones I will enjoy.
DeleteSince you have the reasons that those books didn't grab your attention right off, I think its okay to stop reading them. I'm sure you have piles of TBR, so why don't you move to the next book?
ReplyDeleteYou're right! I do DNF a lot of books but in this case I'm feeling like it might be me and not the books...
DeleteYAS! Read Snow Like Ashes. It's high fantasy similar to the Throne Of Glass Series, Greisha series, Falling Kingdom series. If you like those, you'll love this book.
ReplyDeleteI got the farthest along in that one so I will give it another try....
DeleteHmm. I've heard good things about the first two and am planning on reading both of those, but haven't yet. Althea and Oliver was a DNF for me but part of that was content (I just wasn't enjoying the story) and then that I just wasn't really connecting in any way with the characters. Kind of blah for me. I was tempted to skip to the end and read the last three chapters or something to see how it turned out, but that was all the interest I had in it after reading a third of the book. I know you're not real into fantasy, so the others may not be for you even if others loved them. If Heir of Fire was a stretch for you with fantasy, then yeah. If you do finish A&O maybe you can tell me what happens through an email. ;)
ReplyDeleteI skip to the end a lot, especially if I decide not to finish...
DeleteI haven't heard of these books. If you don't feel like finishing a book, then just don't, put it aside and move on to the next one. Maybe you will pick it up someday again. I do that a lot.
ReplyDeleteI am experiencing a reading slump at the moment. No matter what book I am picking up, it just doesn't seem good. That's why I also haven't been blogging much lately...
Do you really pick them up again? I often think I will, but I rarely do..
DeleteI've heard of all of these! I've had big hopes for Althea and Oliver. I love the movie Reality Bites so the fact that your friend referenced it when describing this book makes me happy! I'm sorry you haven't been real into any of these. I'm not much help because I haven't read any of them. Hopefully one of them will pick up for you and you'll enjoy one.

Loved Reality Bites!! I'm feeling more like reading today, so I will see how it goes...
DeleteI have read Stitching Snow from these, and yes it bothered me that it was so similar to Cinder. I guess you can see some new things to it, but honestly I kept thinking about similarities all the time :( Hopefully you'll find a right read for yourself ;)
ReplyDeleteI hated 'Snow like Ashes', not sure how I convinced myself to keep reading it to the end. You might still enjoy it, but I really didn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way. It's not that the books are bad, I just can't concentrate. And if it comes down to reading or sleeping, I choose sleeping right now. For the last 6 years, the answer to that would always be reading. Who needs sleep?
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I'm still able to listen and concentrate on audiobooks. I've heard 6 in the last week alone. Now if only I could finish at least one book...
Sadly, I haven't tried any of these but usually when I try to force a book, I still end up not liking it. Rereading a favorite usually helps get me out of my funk :)
i've heard good things about all of them, more for snow like ashes and althea &Oliver than Stitching snow… maybe you're in the mood for a quick cute contemporary? none of these are that. Sometimes I feel i need to read a specific genre before i can proceed or else i'm stuck in a reading slump.

I haven't read any of these but I have been hearing crazy good things about Snow Like Ashes. Going to the signing for that book at the end of the month. Sometimes it isn't the books but us. I haven't finished a book in weeks. I just can't get into anything right now. Work has just exhausted my mind.
ReplyDeleteYou know what, I'm in the exact sort of slump. It's hectic and busy and I barelt have time to read, which makes me crabby. So maybe that's wy, but I say drop all of these. I have heard Snow and Ashes is good, so maybe give that another chance for a bit. Idk about u but I also hate the feeling of having a bunch of books unfinished, it makes me feel like a slacker! Haha

I haven't read any of these but it has been interesting reading the responses! I had to DNF two books last week. One after reading 200 pages in it! I just stopped caring and couldn't get the caring to come back.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these but I DO want to read Snow Like Ashes and Stitching Snow. Obviously it's the season of coldness. lol Just not where I live... ;-) I'm kind of sad Stitching Snow sounds so much like Cinder though. Not good! I love Cinder! I don't want to read another version of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I assumed Snow Like Ashes was dystopian too...until I read a few reviews. OKAY THEN. It's got the wrong cover. lol!!
I haven't read any of them but I've heard fantastic things about Snow Like Ashes (love triangle and all) and I've heard some mixed reviews for Stitching Snow.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I leave a book aside because I know I'm not in the right mood for it, but then I've picked them up again later and loved them, so I can tell you that maybe give them a chance later on!
I'm no help because I haven't read any of these though they are all books I'm interested in. Sometimes I get in a mood to not read a specific genre and sometimes I don't have the patience to wait for a book to pick up the pace. I hope if you do try these again they get better.
ReplyDeleteSnow Like Ashes is sitting on my nightstand patiently waiting for me to return to it. I have been in a slump lately where anytime I sit down to read I just want to snooze. Shame on me and my cow :'(
