When Reason Breaks: Blog Tour, Book Spine Poetry and a Giveaway!

I'm excited to be part of the Bloomsbury blog tour for When Reason Breaks by Cindy L. Rodriguez.

First, here's a little more about the book:

When Reason Breaks
by Cindy L. Rodriguez
Published February 10, 2015
by Bloomsbury

A Goth girl with an attitude problem, Elizabeth Davis must learn to control her anger before it destroys her. Emily Delgado appears to be a smart, sweet girl, with a normal life, but as depression clutches at her, she struggles to feel normal. Both girls are in Ms. Diaz’s English class, where they connect to the words of Emily Dickinson. Both are hovering on the edge of an emotional precipice. One of them will attempt suicide. And with Dickinson’s poetry as their guide, both girls must conquer their personal demons to ever be happy.

Cindy L. Rodriguez is a former newspaper reporter turned public school teacher. She now teaches as a reading specialist at a Connecticut middle school but previously worked for the Hartford Courant and the Boston Globe. She and her young daughter live in Plainville, Connecticut. This is her debut novel. Visit her on Twitter @RodriguezCindyL.

For my stop on the tour, I was asked to write some book spine poetry, which is a fun thing that I rarely find time to do.

Here goes...

vanishing girls
the walls around us free to fall
when reason breaks, damage done

I'll give you the sun
if you find me
when reason breaks, just listen
before I fall

  1. Great book spine poetry, I loved your second one! It's surprisingly hard to do isn't it?

  2. Oooh, I love your spine poetry - it's definitely something I want to try out (when I'm reunited with my bookcase again, anyway).

  3. I love Emily Dickinson and all forms of poetry (though I may not understand it all) and I'm most excited to see how it plays a major part in the story!

  4. Oh this sounds such a a amazing book. I did Emily Dickinson at school and it really was a mind of two worlds sometimes, so dark and light at the same time. So I would love to see this effects two girls in different ways. Great book poetry too. Lovely post, Jen.

  5. I love the poetry you have concocted here, Jen - it's quite remarkable, especially the second one. Must try this exercise for myself :) No, I'm not entering the giveaway... Just stopped by to say how interesting When Reason Breaks sounds. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

  6. I like the idea that Dickinson's works have been incorporated and I am curious to see how it all plays out.

  7. Awww, I absolutely adore the second poem. It feels absolutely powerful, especially this line: "when reason breaks, just listen, before I fall." DAMN, THE FEELS, DUDE. THE FEELS. You know how to write a poem, Jen! ;)

  8. I love the second one! I always want to try this but looking at all my books overwhelms me...one day!

  9. I absolutely adore the second poem, Jen! It just works so well and it's beautiful! I wish I had the time to attempt book spine poetry but it's surprisingly hard. Even now, I am staring at my books trying to find a formulation that works :P BUT THEY DON'T *sigh*

    Thanks for sharing, Jen!! :)

  10. I have not read a good contemp with real world problems in a while. :) Kind of reminds me of Define Normal and I really enjoyed that book!

  11. I cannot wait to see what happens with both of the girls....I cannot wait to read about why the get to where they are.

  12. Good job Jen!

Having read Vanishing Girls - I think that poem actually fits that book.

  13. When Reason Breaks sounds like an amazingly wonderful and a bit of an emotional read as well. I have been seeing a lot of positive ARC reviews for this one! And also, the poetry here looks good as well. It really does do well for spine poetry!
