Trending Thursday: A Whole Bunch of Bones and Where Are You, Anyway?

Welcome to Trending Thursday, a when-I-feel-like-it review of some kind of YA trend (okay, it's always on Thursday, so there's that...)

Today's first topic is courtesy of my great blogger friend Lauren of Love Is Not a Triangle, who texted me a while back and was like; what's with all the bones?

She's right.

It may have all started with City of Bones.  Then we had Shadow and Bone, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
What's the appeal of Bones? I guess they are macabre and spooky, yet also kind of sacred and human...

For our second topic, it's another Generic Interchangeable Title-Fest. Where are We?
You Were Here and I Was Here and We Were Here.
Where?  In The Here and Now. Nowhere But Here. Got it? Good.

  1. The generic titles in YA are KILLING ME!! I was recently reading Far From You and someone asked me about it and I was like WHAT?? I forgot the title of the book I was currently reading!!! But that's because there are SO many that are just blah like that. I need something that stands out if I am going to remember it!

  2. I love these comparisons! So interesting. I'm going to be starting We Were Here tomorrow. It's my book club book for next Wednesday, so I need to get cracking! :)

  3. Here has been soo popular these last few years! I feel like there was a break in between "bone" titles for a year or two. They seem to have picked up again in 2014.

  5. I love this post! The first time I read City of Bones (that was the first YA book I ever read, btw), it was becuase I thought it was a creepy story, because you know, bones. But after that one, I keep seeing bones everywhere and sadly, most of them weren't that good.
And as for the generic titles, I always end up forgetting them, so that's no good.

  6. This post got me cracking up! They just really seem to like being "here" eh?

I like bones though, they're kinda.. sexy? When matched with the right words and cover of course!

  8. Bones! That's a helluva lot of bones.

I remember seeing a post that was like "Pick your fantasy book name", and it was basically just a list of elements, you know - like bone, snow, ash, fire, smoke, blood, stars, sun, etc - and then you picked two. Which to be honest, it seems like some YA fantasy authors totally went down that route.

    1. That's true; Bones, Fire, Ash, Smoke. Love this observation!

  9. Love this feature!! I'm not sure about the appeal of bones but Bone Gap and Ink & Bone are both awesome in my opinion! And you are so right re: here in a title -- same with girl, lately!

  11. Lol! I never really notice them until you point them out.

  12. Omg the second set of books ARE ALL SO CONFUSING. XD I really hate it when titles merge, to be honest. Actually for the loooongest time I honestly believed that Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Shadow & Bone were THE SAME BOOK. *facepalm*

  13. Hahaha, omg, I love this! I was thinking about doing a similar title trend post actually a few weeks ago. Bones are so popular! It's interesting how the "bone" titles are mostly objects/backgrounds and the "here" titles feature people generally. I loved this.

  14. I don't like generic titles either. It's like they didn't put much though into the title. The first "Bones" book were all fabulous though...hehe Titles to seem to go through cycles...Unique, then generic. hehe

  15. I knew there were a lot of bones books but I don't think I realized how many there were!
I'm waiting for some "there" titles, haha.

  16. I love seeing these trends, they always make me thing! And yes, plenty of bones in books. I think my favourites that include that are the first two - City of Bones and Shadow and Bone. Oh, also, I have been seeing a lot of 'city' in books too!
