Plot Summary for The Truth About Forever

A long, hot summer. That's what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp.

Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy's father.

But sometimes, unexpected things can happen—things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister's project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl's world upside down.

As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to question her sheltered life.

Review of The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

I read this book a while back, and I liked it, but it wasn't high on my Dessen radar. But this re-read has convinced me that I'd under appreciated The Truth About Forever. This second time around, it really resonated with me.

Macy's life is quiet and orderly -- it's her defense against the unexpected loss of her father. But when Macy's predictable boyfriend suddenly tells her he needs his space, Macy also gains space of her own to re-imagine her life to include a job at a catering company, a return to the sport she loves, and a chance forge a friendship - and maybe more - with Wes.

Wes was an amazing love interest, a guy whose charm and adorability kind of sneaks up on you. I was really rooting for Macy to find happiness with him!

If, like me, you didn't really take notice of this Dessen, give it a second look!

  1. This sounds like a nice summer read. Just wanted to let you know though that it appears there's a glitch with your post... or there's a problem with my computer. There's just a lot of "w" going on. ;)

    2. LoL I think something just glitched when it was published. I'm just glad I don't have some weird virus or anything. That would have sucked.

  3. I totally under-rated this book as well!! I never really counted it among my favorite Sarah Dessen books-- but when I read it last year for book club, I was wondering what the heck was wrong with me. This book is CLASSIC Sarah Dessen. It's probably the one book I would point to for someone who's never read her books and wants to get the gist of what she's about.

The only think I didn't love was Wes-- only because he's the ultimate misunderstood bad boy with a heart of gold and ughhhh that trope makes me roll my eyes. But if I'm being honest, Wes was adorable and I did love him, just get sick of that trope.

  4. That's great that it not only held up to a re-read but you liked it more. I always wonder how I'd feel about books I read years ago.

I used to re-read quite often but I don't anymore.
