On Wednesdays this summer, Steph at TheFakeSteph, Jenn at OwlReadIt, Lauren from the Headless Owl and I are all blogging about our reading (or re-reading) of the Vampire Academy series. If you've read the books and want to chime in, or if you're curious about this much beloved series, we hope you enjoy following along.
If you've missed prior posts, you can catch up on my post on Vampire Academy, my post on Frostbite, my post on Shadow Kiss, my post on Blood Promise, and my post on Spirit Bound. Whew.
Since it's summer school, I'm not doing formal reviews, just giving you my thoughts like we're passing notes in class. I'll add some amusing graphics as well...
Week Six assigned reading: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead.
Very brief plot summary:
At the end of book five, Rose has been arrested, which does not please her one bit. But Rose gets busted out of prison! Meanwhile, Lissa is dealing with all the intrigue going on at court. Rose gets the bright idea that Lissa should be nominated as queen to serve as a distraction while Rose tries to solve a murder mystery. Lissa's not so happy with this plan.
As Last Sacrifice opens, Rose is still incarcerated.
Was that really a movie? Anyway, Rose is in Royally Pissed Off Mode, which is Rose at her best. She's done some sketchy stuff, but she's innocent of murder and she's ticked. But her friends come to the rescue .... prison break. Yes, again.
And guess who's back? Sydney!
Sydney's hair is longer now. I still totally see her as a buttoned-up Michelle Williams. This prison break episode seems to be what gets Sydney in trouble with the Alchemists, which will come into play in Bloodlines.
Then, LOL -- Rose has to elude some people chasing her. So she goes to a mall and disguises herself wearing this:

A pink bedazzled baseball cap? Rose, you're too funny. Meanwhile, Lissa has to go through all these trials in order to be eligible to be elected queen. It's like a cross between Goblet of Fire and Divergent, because....
one of them is a FEAR LANDSCAPE -- see, Vampire Academy has had all kinds of influence on YA pop culture.
Meanwhile, Rose is trying solve the murder and find a mysterious person who might make it possible for Lissa to be queen.
I'm so proud of Lissa in this book -- she really steps up and acts like a leader. I'm now picturing Lissa as Princess Grace.
Okay, I don't want to tell you how everything ends, in case you plan on reading this series. But I loved the way it wraps up. Everyone gets a happy ending ... almost.
I have had SO much fun doing St. Vladimir's Summer School. It was the most fun I ever had in school! Thanks to Steph, Ashelynn (hope you get that computer fixed!) Jenn and Lauren. What are we reading next summer?
Definitely not a happy ending for everyone!!! :-( I thought the trials Lissa had to go through were strange. How does suffering in heat make you a good queen?!
ReplyDeleteI know, I know. I do think that person in question will get a happy ending one day. I liked the trials. Suffering in the heat is the ultimate test of will for a vampire, right?
DeleteI think that person will get a happy ending too, one day... just need to find the right person :)
DeleteExactly!
DeleteAnd this is the last book :( I'll miss these review :D They reminded me of VA and now I'll pick one of the books and randomly read some page! :)
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed the books so much and now have to just sit around and wait for Indigo Spell to come out!
DeleteYeah I'll sit beside you to make you company while we're both waiting :)
DeleteSounds perfect! I'll bring the cherry slushies!
DeleteDeal...you make us some cookies! :D
DeleteThe ending was about 10 pages too long of wrapup, but this book definitely had my favorite plot. A royal election, a murder mystery, AND a search for a secret baby? Yes please! But seriously, at the end, the whole thing with the bond. I don't know why but it really bugged me.
ReplyDeleteNext summer: Soul Screamers, Shadow Hunters, Gallagher Girls?
Really? I liked that part!!
DeleteAw, I'm sad these posts are over. I loved reliving the VA books. They're actually what gave me the push to finally read The Golden Lily. And now I have to suffer the long, arduous wait until The Indigo Spell. Thanks a lot! :P
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree. I think that person will get their happy ending eventually. ;)
I'm sad too! But excited about all the great fall releases!
DeleteI like the sound of trials to be queen-I bet I'd like reading that!
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed all of your posts about this. I think they did a good job of hitting on what makes these books so enjoyable while not spoiling anything for those of us who haven't read them yet. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed them. I had so much fun.
DeleteI once again just looked at your pics and didn't read much since I suck and haven't read any of the books in the VA series. Well, I read like 6 chapters of the first one, but that doesn't count lol!!
ReplyDeleteIt would have been fun to have you with us. Maybe next summer!
DeleteI'm in LOVE with this book! I devoured this book in ONE DAY! It was so thick but I just had to read it and find out what happened! The ending was still weird to me how the happy ending worked out. I don't know how to explain it.. But yeah, anyway... I can't wait to read Dimitri and Rose's little story in an anthology :) I can't remember when it's coming out though.
ReplyDeleteI really loved this book too! I also read it really fast!
DeleteI really enjoyed this one and while I wish for more from Rose's perspective, I think it was a good ending.
ReplyDeleteBrandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog
I really love Sydney too and am excited for Indigo Spell!
DeleteThis was fun! I will have to read these again when I have time (don't' know when that will be) and I've got to catch up on the next series too.
ReplyDeleteYes it's so hard to find time to re-read!
DeleteI'll miss all our reviews for VA Jen! They were so fun and I'll definetly pick them up soon! :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha, that is SO true about the pink baseball cap! What was she thinking? And Michelle Williams as Sydney is a great call! Maybe a tad too old, but I can totally see it. I was late joining but I'm definitely going to miss Summer School and your awesome posts! Please do more of these in the future. :)
ReplyDeleteWe're already brainstorming for next summer and hope you can join us'
DeleteAww, cute hat! ;) I can seriously imagine Rose wearing that! And I totally agree with the ending part- I was happy for Rose and Dimitri and all, but poor Adrian!
ReplyDeleteOh, and congrats on passing summer school! :P
Maybe you can join us next summer!
DeleteOoh, I'd love to! :) I'd have loved to joined this one, but seeing as how I just read the entire VA series this April, I'm planning to read maybe in the next few months...
DeleteI finally finished it! I love the hat in your picture, it's almost exactly how I pictured it! It was too funny!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the ending and have ordered Bloodlines, hopefully it doesn't take too long to get here!
Poor Adrian! <3
